When it is worth doing
- You have just moved in. The single most common reason people call us, and the most sensible.
- Keys lost or stolen, particularly if anything with them identified the address.
- Somebody tried the door. Even a failed attempt can leave a cylinder damaged inside where you cannot see it.
- A relationship or a business partnership has ended and keys are in hands that should no longer have them.
- The cylinder is simply old. Anything without anti-bump protection is a known quantity to anyone who wants in.
The cylinder is usually the answer
On most doors in Elche the lock body is fine and only the barrel needs swapping. It takes under half an hour, costs a fraction of a full replacement, and instantly makes every existing key useless. Replacing the whole unit earns its keep when the mechanism is worn out, when the door has been forced, or when you are moving up to more locking points than the door currently has.
We will tell you which of those you are in. There is no version of this job where talking you into the expensive option is good for us: you live here, and so do we.

You do not need all of them on a first-floor interior door. You probably do want most of them on a ground-floor flat, a property that stands empty, or a street-facing door in a block.
Doors in this municipality
Carrús grew quickly twice over, in the 1950s and again between 1990 and 2010, and a great deal of its stock is on original or first-replacement cylinders that have honestly earned retirement. Altabix, the expansion east of the historic palm grove and the city's main growth area in the last boom, is multipoint doors where the cylinder is often fine and the alignment is not. Out on the coast at Arenales del Sol — where the registered population has quadrupled since the mid-1990s and a fifth of residents are foreign, many of them retired — the recurring job is a cylinder that has sat unused through a winter of salt air and windblown sand and now refuses to turn smoothly.
Keys are not part of what we do. We fit, change and repair locks. We do not cut, copy, duplicate, supply or program keys of any kind. If a lock we fit comes with keys from the manufacturer, those are the keys; more copies are a matter for a key-cutting shop.

What we will not do is anything that amounts to issuing and controlling keys for a building.

What people ask before they call
Cylinder or the whole lock — how do I know which I need?
If the mechanism works and it is only a question of who holds a key, the cylinder is enough and it is far cheaper. If the lock body itself is worn, if the door has been forced, or if you want more points of closure than it currently has, the whole unit comes out. Send a photo of the edge of the door and the faceplate on WhatsApp and we can usually tell you before anyone visits.
I have just bought here. Should I change everything?
Change the cylinders on every external door, yes. You have no way of knowing how many working keys exist: previous owners, the agent, a cleaner, a builder, the neighbour who watered the plants. Against the price of the property it is trivial, and it is the only way to actually know.
What do the protections on a cylinder actually stop?
Anti-bump resists opening by percussion with a modified key, which is how a lot of quick entries are done. Anti-pick resists manipulation of the pins. Anti-drill puts hardened inserts in the way of a bit. Anti-snap makes the cylinder break in a controlled place instead of handing over the mechanism. A cylinder with none of them is a formality rather than a lock.
Do you carry stock or does it have to be ordered?
The common sizes and patterns are on the van, so most changes finish in the same visit. Unusual models, long or asymmetric cylinders and some armoured-door units get ordered, and then you get a date rather than a vague promise.
Can one key open the street door and my flat?
Not through us. Systems where a single key works several doors mean issuing and controlling keys, and supplying keys is not something we do at all. We fit and repair the locks; anything involving the keys themselves is a job for a key specialist.
My key has been getting stiff for months. Is it the key or the lock?
Usually the lock, and occasionally a badly cut copy that has been quietly wearing the pins down every time it is used. Either way, stiffness that is getting worse ends in a snapped key. It is a twenty-minute job now and an out-of-hours call-out later.
