What we are actually dealing with
- Pulled shut on the latch. The commonest and the least damaging. The lock was never thrown; only the latch is holding.
- Deadlocked with the keys inside or lost. A different job entirely, and the one where method matters most.
- A key snapped in the cylinder. We extract what is left and then assess whether the cylinder is still worth keeping.
- A cylinder that has seized. The key goes in correctly and nothing turns.
- Multipoint and armoured doors. Several bolts into the frame, common in the blocks that went up around Altabix in the last boom.
Non-destructive first, and what that means in practice
The phrase gets used loosely. Here it means the cylinder survives, you keep your existing keys, and there is no new part to pay for. We work from the gentlest technique that could plausibly work and escalate only when it will not. That takes a little longer at the door than going straight in with a drill, and it is very often the difference between a call-out and a call-out plus a new lock.
Sometimes it simply is not available: a cylinder already mangled by an attempted break-in, a mechanism that has failed internally, or a high-security model built specifically to resist what we would otherwise do. In those cases you get told, along with what the replacement will cost, and you decide.
Doors in Elche, and why the type changes the job
The old quarter around the basilica and the palm orchards holds a lot of original timber with locks that have been in place for decades — those reward patience and respond badly to force. Carrús, built fast in the 1950s and again through the 1990s and 2000s, is full of communal street doors taking constant daily use. Altabix, the city's expansion east of the historic palm grove, means modern multipoint doors where the fault is usually alignment rather than the lock. And on the coast at Arenales del Sol and La Marina, doors sit unopened for months while sand off the dune systems works its way into everything.
That is the reason the first question on the phone is what sort of door it is, not where you are.
Entitlement: the bit people find surprising
A locksmith in Spain may not simply open a door because somebody at it asks. We have to establish that you are entitled to be inside. It takes a minute when you have a document, and there is almost always a route when you do not. Far from being an obstacle, it is the thing that stops anyone doing the same to your front door next week.
If a child or a vulnerable adult is shut inside, say so in the first sentence when you ring. It changes the order we do things in, and if there is any immediate risk you should be calling 112 at the same time.
Not getting shut out again
- Leave a spare set with somebody who lives nearby, not in another country.
- If the door closes behind you on its own, fit a stop or disable the closer.
- Replace a cylinder that has started to need persuading. Stiffness is a warning, not a quirk.
- After losing keys, change the cylinder even if they turn up later. You do not know where they have been.
Questions
What people ask before they call
Will my lock still work afterwards?
After a non-destructive opening, yes — the cylinder is in exactly the state it was in before we arrived, and you carry on using the same keys. After a destructive one it does not, because the cylinder has been sacrificed to get the door open. Which of the two you are getting is decided before anything starts, and you are told.
How do you decide whether to drill?
By working upwards from the least invasive method that stands a chance. Drilling is the last option, not the first, and it comes into play when the cylinder is already jammed, when someone has previously attacked it, or when the model genuinely does not permit anything else. A locksmith who reaches for a drill in the first two minutes is choosing speed over your money.
What paperwork do I need to show you?
Something tying you to that address: a DNI or NIE showing it, a rental contract, the escritura, or a recent utility bill in your name. Spanish law requires a locksmith to establish entitlement before opening a door, and it is as much your protection as ours — it is the reason nobody can call us out to your property and be let in.

That is the normal situation, not the awkward exception. Tell us when you ring and we work out another route: a neighbour who knows you, the community administrator, a document you can reach in a phone or an email account, or a landlord who can confirm the tenancy. It gets resolved more often than not.
Do you open storerooms, garages and gates as well as flats?
Yes. Flat and house doors, communal entrances, storerooms, meter cupboards, garage doors, and the plot gates and outbuildings that come with country properties out in the partidas. Same entitlement check in each case.
The door has to be shoved before the key will turn. Is that urgent?
It is not an emergency yet, and that is precisely why it is worth dealing with. A door you have to lift or lean on has dropped, and every turn of the key is being forced against a mechanism that is not lined up. Left alone it ends as a snapped key or a seized lock, and it will choose a Sunday night to do it.
