The shutter that will not lift at seven in the morning

Elche is Spain’s principal footwear-producing city, and the industry is not tucked away on one estate. It runs from workshops folded into the older polígonos at Carrús and Altabix out to Elche Parque Empresarial — over a million square metres between the Saladas and Torrellano partidas, reported to hold around 49% of the municipality’s employment and 36% of its companies.

That is a lot of roller shutters, and they all get opened at roughly the same hour.

The economics are not about the lock

A shutter lock is an inexpensive component. The bill that matters when one fails at seven in the morning is the one nobody invoices: staff standing outside, a delivery that cannot be taken, a production run that starts three hours late. Against that, the price of the repair is a rounding error — which is exactly why it is worth spending it a week earlier.

It always gives notice

Commercial shutters are among the most honest pieces of hardware there are. They tell you, for weeks:

• The key needs a particular angle, and only one person has the knack.
• The curtain runs unevenly, higher at one end than the other.
• It sticks at the same point in its travel every time.
• The ground bolt needs kicking before it will seat.
• It has started making a noise it did not make last year.

Every one of those is a fault in progress. None of them is a reason to stop trading today, which is precisely why they get absorbed into the routine and repeated daily until the morning it does not move at all.

What actually goes

Usually not the lock body. Usually the alignment: a curtain that has gone off true, guides that have worn, a ground bolt whose keep in the floor has filled with grit, or a shutter lock being twisted every day because the curtain is not sitting where the bolt expects. The lock is the part that finally breaks, but it is rarely the part that was wrong.

Which matters, because replacing a shutter lock on a shutter that is still running off true gets you a few months and the same morning again.

The sensible habit

Book the annoying one in. Not an emergency, not a crisis — a planned half hour on a quiet afternoon to deal with the thing that has needed a knack since spring. Planned work goes into normal hours, costs normal rates, and happens while the shop is trading rather than while it is not.

The unglamorous truth of commercial locksmithing is that almost all of it could have been an appointment.

And if it is already seven

Then it is an emergency and it goes through the emergency line. But when it is sorted, ask what caused it, because the answer is usually something that had been visible for a month.
